How to estimate fence materials from total length
A basic fence takeoff starts with total fence-line length, subtracts gate openings, and then divides the remaining run by the chosen section or post spacing. PrepMyBuild also estimates posts, rails and post concrete from the assumptions shown on screen.
Gate openings change the panel run
A gate occupies part of the total fence line, so its width should not also be counted as full fence panels. The calculator subtracts the assumed gate opening before estimating sections.
Corners and layout can add posts
The simple planner is best for a straight run. Corners, changes in grade, end conditions, double gates and structural details can change the true post count.
