Gravel driveway calculator

Estimate a practical starting quantity with transparent assumptions you can adjust.

Quick answer: Estimate compacted volume from area and depth, then convert volume to tons using an assumed material density.

What this result is for

Use the estimate to prepare for a supplier conversation, compare project assumptions, or sanity-check quantities mentioned in a contractor proposal. It is not a substitute for site measurements or professional design.

How much gravel for a 50 × 10 ft driveway?

At 4 inches deep: 50 × 10 × (4 ÷ 12) ÷ 27 = 6.17 cubic yards before allowance. At an illustrative 1.4 tons per cubic yard with 10% extra, that is 9.5 tons. Replace the density with your supplier’s figure. A planning allowance is not a measured compaction factor.

Before ordering

Confirm the aggregate product, loose versus compacted quantity, base layers, drainage and delivery minimums. This calculator estimates quantities; it does not choose the correct driveway construction.
