How to estimate fence posts from spacing
Post spacing converts a total fence run into a count of bays or sections. For a simple straight run, the number of posts is generally one more than the number of spaces, with additional considerations around gates and layout changes.
Spacing is a project input, not a recommendation
Enter the spacing required by the fence system, manufacturer instructions, design or local conditions. PrepMyBuild does not determine the structurally appropriate spacing for you.
Why the final bay may be shorter
If fence length is not an exact multiple of your spacing, the calculator rounds the number of sections up. That means at least one bay may need to be shorter than the maximum spacing.
Gates need their own posts and hardware
The planner accounts for gate openings in the run, but gate posts may have different structural requirements from ordinary line posts.
A straight 120 ft run divides into 15 spaces at 8 ft, producing a planning count of 16 posts before any special corner or gate requirements.
