Driveway gravel comes down to area, depth and density.
Gravel is one of those materials that looks easy to eyeball until a dump truck is involved. The clean way to estimate it is to calculate the driveway volume from length × width × depth, convert that volume to cubic yards, and then convert yards to tons using the density of the material you’re actually buying.
The last part matters because “gravel” is not one product. Crushed stone, dense graded aggregate and decorative gravel can have different weights. Your supplier’s figure is better than a generic internet number.
The raw volume is about 4.63 yd³. With a 10% planning allowance, that becomes about 5.09 yd³. At an example density of 1.4 tons per cubic yard, that would be roughly 7.1 tons.

Depth is the number worth checking twice
Going from 3 inches to 4 inches adds one-third more material. That can mean several extra tons on a long driveway. Use the depth appropriate for the layer you’re installing rather than copying a generic example. New driveway construction may involve multiple layers with different materials and depths.
Why cubic yards and tons both show up
Volume tells you how much space the material occupies. Suppliers often sell aggregate by weight. To move between the two, you need a density. That density can vary with stone type, gradation and moisture, so the calculator lets you adjust it instead of hiding the assumption.
Don’t forget the shape of the driveway
A rectangular driveway is straightforward. If yours flares out near the street or has a parking pad, split it into simple rectangles, calculate each piece, and add them together. It takes another minute and is usually much better than pretending the whole area is one average width.
Base, top layer and existing conditions
A resurfacing project and a brand-new driveway are very different jobs. Drainage, subgrade, geotextile, base stone, compaction and local conditions all influence the build-up. The quantity calculation is useful, but it is not a pavement design.
